Therapy and Rehabilitation

For us is disability a psycho-social trait; more important is the rehabilitation process than the result itself. Our work is holistic, all factors like environment, familiar economy, local culture, relation forms, management of familiar and personal emotions and all other factors which could influence the disabled person, are tried to be integrated.

Camps (Spring and Summer Courses)

The goal of the camps is to promote the inclusion, social interaction and independence of children with disabilities from communities from the southern coast of Oaxaca by manual, creative and recreational activities. These activities also create opportunities for families from different communities to meet and exchange experiences with each other.

The children with disabilities live in very isolated communities where life is defined by the natural environment, labour activities of their families such as agriculture, pottery or needlework and the local culture.

They receive just a little or no stimulation from their families, because of a lack of time or knowledge.

Because of their precarious economical situation, it’s impossible for these children to get to other communities where they could get to know people, activities and places which would be beneficial to their development and learning process.

The lack of understanding and awareness on part of persons who live in the communities generates rejection of people with disabilities.

All these conditions limit the possibilities of rehabilitation and inclusion of children with disabilities in the communities we are working with.

That’s why Piña Palmera organizes these camps during school vacations, where children with disabilities and their parents can participate in activities with the aim to stimulate their development, learning processes and social interaction.

Short one-day camps with games and other recreational activities are also carried out in the participants’ communities.

Various activities are proposed to the children, as for example:

Wood and paint Workshop.
Paper Recycling Workshop.
Dying – take away
Elaboration of sweets.
Pottery workshop
Plastic Arts
Sports and Recreation

Human Communication and Learning

The objective of Human Communication is to support children and young people with language, learning or communication difficulties and to orientate their families. We also work together with schools and teacher to help making learning materials more as accessible.

Sessions of 50 minutes are given one or two times a week, depending on the case.take away

First we talk to the person with disability and his/her family and evaluate their situation. Then we develop a program according to the needs and resources, taking into account the whole community, in order to find alternative ways of communication.

At the same moment, the family is trained so that they continue the program at home.take away

Outpatient Consultations

The general practitioner in Piña Palmera provides primary care and attends people with disabilities for general medical treatments.

Our users receive special attention from doctors in Rehabilitation, Neurology and Orthopedy, who visit us two or three times a year in order to offer consultations, diagnose, treatments and attendance.take away

Persons who require a specialist’s attention, such as surgical interventions, electroencephalograms, orthosis or hearing aids are referred and accompanied by a staff member to hospitals in the city of Oaxaca and Mexico City.

Occasionally, we help families with low incomes to find funds to cover surgical interventions, special medic treatments or other costs related to the care and rehabilitation of a family member with disability.

The hydrotherapy is carried out every other Saturday at the beaches close to Piña Palmera (such as Playa Panteón in Puerto Ángel), together with the young people who live in the special care area and participants of temporary theapy.

It’s a method in which the water functions as a rehabilitation medium. The floating effect allows the person to move in a way which wouldn’t be possible outside the water. Most of all, the person can enjoy the experience of movement in a natural environment, an activity they can also carry out in their own communities in rivers or lagoons.

This technique allows us to realize special exercises based on recreational games which facilitate movements of the limbs and which help the child to improve his consciousness, concerning the realized movements.take away

Early Intervention and stimulation

The objective of the early intervention is to give continuous attention to children with or without disabilities, in order to promote the development of physical, intellectual and affective abilities from an early age to the maximum. The age of the children we work with in this group ranges from newly born up till school entry.

At the moment we work every Wednesday from 10:00am to 12:00pm. During the first hour, we work with specific programs of exercises for the stimulation of each patient. During the second hour, we organize a group for self-help and for the reflection of the fact to have a child with disability. At the same moment, we train the parents.take away

According to the number of families attending we encourage to work in groups, so the children and their families get a chance to meet each other and exchange experiences.

During the whole activity, the family plays a very important role in the rehabilitation process of the child. The affective part of the parents, grandparents, brothers etc. influences the well balanced development of the child. Take away

We teach the families how to stimulate and play with their children, using exercises and every day activities with simple materials that are available in the home.

We also promote inclusion of the children in preschool and primary school. We guide the children and their families through this process, advise teachers and carry out disability awareness workshops with teaching staff and students.

The physiotherapy-area is in charge of evaluating and exploring physical abilities of all persons in the region which are attended, in order to know what the patients are able to achieve. Later, we decide if we put us in charge of the therapy or if we have to refer them, in some special cases, to other instances – for example to a special hospital. Take away

People with disabilities, people with a temporary lesion and/or people who suffer from some sort of pain can receive physical therapy treatment. Based on a thorough evaluation of the person’s situation, including their physical abilities, difficulties and aims, the rehabilitation process is lined out. The recommended exercises and activities are simple and can be carried out in the person’s home with materials they have there. Thus, the person does not become dependent on a therapist or special equipment. Occasionally we refer people to specialist hospitals for investigations or further attention.

In accordance with the resulting evaluation, exercise programs for practicing at home, which are revised in Piña Palmera at certain dates, are elaborated. Where needed, an orthosis or a wheelchair is proportioned or adapted, using materials from the region. We also train the user or his family members in the correct use and maintenance of these aids.

Temporal Therapy

In temporary therapy, a person with a disability and/or a family member come to stay in Piña Palmera for a limited amount of time, in order to focus on the rehabilitation process with a continuous program and activities.
During this time, the family member and/or the person with disability is taught how to continue his/her rehabilitation process at home or in their community. beneath the supervision of the responsible therapist. Take away The participant also takes part in Piña Palmera’s productive activities, such as the garden, the paper recycling workshop, the carpentry or the handicraft shop.

A member of our multidisciplinary team is responsible to keep evaluating the rehabilitation process together with the person with disability and his/her family.
